More about the trip

Newcastle
Newcastle is modern and historic. It has always been known for its beautiful architecture, the famous Tyne River and the bridges which cross it, but nowadays the city is also very famous for its shopping, galleries, football and nightlife.

Historic city of Durham
Durham, with its steep (you’ll be out of breath!) winding, cobbled streets is old. There have been people living here for 4000 years, but the present city was started by monks in 995AD. They were looking for somewhere special to put the body of Saint Cuthbert – the patron saint of Northumbria (the North Eastern part of England) and chose here because it is on a big hill (you can see very far!). 100 years later they started building the Cathedral which some people have called the finest in the world! And in 1071, the Normans built Durham Castle which is now owned by the University of Durham - it’s the oldest student accommodation in the world - the students actually live here!. When we visit they are going to show us round the castle - their home.

interesting fact: Tony Blair (the last British Prime Minister) and Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) went to school together in Durham.
